REVENGE!

After the shambolic Worthington Cup semi-final showing anything less than a win would have been disappointing, Big Sam set the tone for the day when he and the team showed their contempt for Aldridges side by turning up, in tracksuits, only 40 minutes before kick off. It was never going to be a good game, and we had most of the action, the defence seemed to be impregnable against Tranmere's pathetic route one tactics. And as it seems to be the case that whenever we play this fixture, the Birkenhead team do the fouling while their fans do the moaning (how can they accuse us of cheating when a good percentage of the goals they score at at home is through the aiding/abetting of Dave Challinors dodgy skills, which would be more at home on a netball court, cheating bastards!). Nevertheless, justice was served shortly after half time when Mike Whitlow of all people broke through the offside trap and calmly slotted it in. The home team persisted with the same old wanky tactics and resorting to attempts to hack down the 'footballers' as frustration set in (Holdsworth was booked for diving in what looked to be a clear cut penalty). All in all a top days work by the real 'White Army'. Sam Allardyce rubbed it in by whisking the team away to the much more civilised and hygenic surroundings of the Reebok stadium for the post match showers, baths, and no doubt a beer or two for the lads in the executive suite, well deserved too!

After a not too indulgent Friday night on the beer, I made the fatal mistake of going for a kebab at a certain takeaway on Bank St, and as a consequence was rudely awakened throughout my kip by the call of the Porcelain. Still, despite this I was determined to get to the match as my ticket was bought, so come 12:45 pm I made my way to the bus stop, white as a sheet and with a ringer like a chewed orange! anyway to cut it short I had to admit defeat and bail out halfway up St Helens road or risk the shame of puking violently in front of a busload of people and then spending a couple of hours pebbledashing one of the East stand lower bogs. So you'll have to make do with what the official site has to offer. The moral of the story is avoid eating dodgy kebabs that smell like wheelie-bins, or drink enough booze to neutralise the offending bacteria!

Bolton : Jaaskelainen, Whitlow, Bergsson, Fish, Barness, Frandsen, Farrelly, Passi, Hansen (Richardson 84), Holdsworth (Marshall 58), Rankin (Ricketts 67).

Preston : Moilanen, Alexander (Cartwright 69), Edwards, McKenna (Robinson 74), Appleton, Jackson, Basham, Rankine, Anderson, Mackem, Murdoch.

West Brom 0

Bolton 2 (Rankin 23, Farrelly 75)

Not having attended the match I can only pass on second hand information really, but to get this first win under our belts is a good thing anyhow. Its seems like Barness is settling into the team well, as there have been good reports of his performance all round, Rankin got his second goal in as many games (although it's the first one that will actually count!), after some great build up play and either a great bit of skill or a jammy touch, depending on how cynical you are - by Bo Hansen. Simon Charlton went off injured early on, which meant a reshuffle which saw O' Kane switch sides and Leam Richardson entering the fray, filling in very well by all accounts and perhaps making a case for a starting role in the near future. Anyway, the signs are certainly looking encouraging, and as for Isiah Rankin, if he carries on like this then he could be the man with the firepower to replace Gudjohnsen.

West Brom : Jensen, Lyttle, Butler, Carbon, Clement, Quinn (Oliver 60), McInnes, Sneekes, Van Blerk (Taylor 60), Hughes, Roberts.

Bolton : Jaaskelainen, O' Kane (Marshall 67), Bergsson, Fish, Barness, Charlton (Richardson 10), Frandsen, Farrelly, Passi, Hansen, Rankin (Holdsworth 54).

Bolton 1 (Frandsen 27 pen)

Burnley 1 (Gray 56)

Attendance:20,662

The way the first half went you could be forgiven for thinking an easy win was on the cards, with Isiah Rankin particularly impressive on his surprise debut - causing a proper headache for the Burnley defence and, scoring a perfectly good goal after being fouled only for the dimwit in the black to point to the spot, luckily we had Per Frandsen back in the fray, on hand to bang it home. The jury's still out on the other couple of new players that started the game with Barness looking the slightly better of the two, but its early days yet. Once again the same old complacency crept in during the second half and we let them get one back and in the closing stages it was Burnley who looked like they might snatch all 3 points, egged on by their travelling army of Clampetts, although Ian Marshall had a late chance cleared off the line.

Bolton : Jaaskelainen, O' Kane (Richardson 83), Bergsson, Fish, Barness, Charlton, Frandsen, Farrelly, Passi, Hansen (Marshall 62), Rankin.

Burnley : Crichton, Mullin (Little 47), Thomas, Cox, Davis, Cook, Cooke (Branch 57), Briscoe, Weller, Ball, Gray.
